So the rain has flooded the cellar with the server and there is no backup?

Maybe homeland security folks got their hands on it.
I think the server is located near Phoenix / Texas.

Yeah! Racy-5.2.2 seems to be too good for some people.

Since Puppy Linux is used by so many people in so many different parts of the world for so many different things it is sad when a fine support system like the Forum is down for even an hour.

Hopefully they will sort the problem and get it restored quickly, with better firewalls and better filters, and if they find the culprit(s) they will be prosecuted for their vandalism.

Meanwhile, perhaps a couple of mirrors on different server sites in different locations might help with up-time?
I was wondering if it had been attacked, well the thought crossed my mind when I noticed a new member and the avatar was huge, when you normally can only have a 80X80 image, the pic was linked to some spiritual site.
I was going to report it as Spam but I was distracted and didn't get to do that, I hope not to much damage has been done if was an attack.

Yes I saw that huge avatar too and then the forum was down next time I checked in.
I also found it surprising that anybody would do such posting. As I remember them
only teased and wrote nothing relating to the thread. So I found it surprising too.

Does not google have some kind of cache that can show that page again
if that person wrote something that can connect it to the shut down?

his user name was *|* which mimicked how the Avatar looked too.

Yes nooby, thats the one I saw, the name alone made me a little suspicious, it does seem a bit of a coincidence, if it is the case there is no telling to the amount of damage that may have been done,
let hope nothing to serious, we have already lost a number of sites with packages that will never be seen again.

Thanks, so your knowledge about forum software tells you
that no ordinary user logged in the usual way can make the
avatar that big? And your conclusion is that that person
had already hacked himself in as a Admin or something and
could do anything him wanted? And that the teasing was just
to show how happy he was over to have succeeded?

It was an odd thing he did. It was late at night at my place
so I went to bed so I don't remember anything more about it.

Sad that I did not take a screen dump of it .

What about that google cache thing. is it not possible to read
deleted things using google. I have not tested due to lack of knowledge.

My gut feeling told me that his behavior was a bad omen of something coming
but I had no idea it would mean that the forum would go down.

But hopefully it was just a bad timing and totally unrelated.

here's a few bottom lines

Have e-mailed John, but suspect he's already aware? He's usually very quick on the scene. Suggested he ask BK to post advisories here when problems occur. Mirroring would be ideal but throws additional costs onto another person(s). Doesn't help that John's principal moderator lives in one of the last timezones to welcome the new day. Unfortunate that good Wary & Racy have just been released and Puppy up to 5th in the 7-day DW chart. Regularly attracting such worldwide acclaim, seems time to implement some new options?

Re forum
John sent me and others an email recently that he would be traveling for awhile and not readily available. I don't recall any specific dates.

I guess John will take a look at it whenever he next reads his email.

Nothing that I can do about it.

Well, we can go over to our "secondary" forum:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/puppy-71/
doesn't matter to me or am i surprised by events unfolding over there, or whatever may come up next

i would just like to point out in regards to this part
Quote:
what do you want to prove by attacking people who can not defend themselves
this was an ongoing theme actively promoted and encouraged from those forums, affecting many known individuals who also could not respond, often to complete fabrications and falsehoods, regardless,

i leave it with you, in your house

the first person i'm aware of affected years ago ended up telling his story at D/W, (causing a HUGE kerfuffle, as well as changes) who also seem to be fed up with pup stuff, as i haven't seen a single pup comment there in some time, outside of announcements,

the pup game has always been, shifting blame from probs originating in their forums, to others, one way or another,

at the same time staunchly defending their status quo

hi all, shame during our time of distress the whole puppy community is attacked here at LQ.

that says more about the attacker than us. haha

didn't see the large avatar but that will leave evidence. hope they are caught.

archbang has new live release. very fast and it has 3.0xx kernel. but kind of hard to figure out under the hood stuff.

hope our stay is short here.

Thanks Jim

Yes nothing wrong with LQ but some users seems to love to hate Murga and drag it up here
so would be better to get Murga forum back online.

Re your latest catch. "archbang has new live release."

Maybe you could write about it in their place or the main Arch here on LQ?
I totally failed to boot them on NTFS but could boot Godane's Archiso version
but I don't know how much that one is different from archbang's latest.

So will look for your text in LQ on the main distro or the Arch section.
Which seems most proper. was it on USB or a ext3 partition or NTFS?
What menu.lst code and so on. Always interesting to learn from others experiences.

Sorry derail

I haven't spent much time here at LQ, mainly because I have found murga's forum to be comprehensive and available. So this outage is really frustrating. Hope to see it back in action soon - there are some things I'm still following up.

Glad this is here though. Who knows, I might even learn something new.

Hey nooby

I got your PM but I can't reply, something about your settings not accepting PMs

Any way, you can go to my site, find my contact details on the "Links" page and email me if you want.
