How do I configure X on Dell Inspiron 700m?

I installed Puppy 2.0.2 to a usb pen drive. After a bit of fiddling, I got Puppy to boot my desktop machine from the usb pen drive. I would like to be able to boot puppy from the usb pen drive on other machines, for instance on my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 700m. Neither Xvesa nor Xorg works on the 700m. Both appear to be working but end up dropping me to a command line.

As far as I can tell, the lcd monitor on my 700m will operate only at 1280 by 800 and 60Hz; at least if I change to something else from WinXP and reboot, the display setting is changed back to 1280 by 800 at 60Hz. I assume that Xvesa won't work because this setting is incompatible with the Xvesa restrictions and that Xorg won't work because there is no lcd setting for 1280 by 800 in the xorgwizard.

Can some one please tell me how to get Puppy 2.0.2 working on my laptop.

Thanks

Mike

Edit: The Puppy 2.0.2 live cd boots into Xorg using the first lcd choice in xorgwizard and the 1280 by 800 16 bit choice on the next screen. Same choice booting from usb pen drive fails. ???????????

Hi Mike!

If you download and install Puppy 2.10 it should fix your problem. I think Barry updated X. My Toshiba U205 (1280x800) Laptop works in 2.10 and did not in 2.02.

Hope it helps...

if you have the ipw3945 wifi card and get it to work drop me a line.

Hey! Can you post your xorg.conf?

I have the same laptop running Ubuntu and I can not get it to display the right resolution.

Thank you!

Hey, if you mean you can't get 1280x800 for your monitor, then you might want to look into this small script called 915resolution that hacks up the video card's firmware (from what i've read) to output the native resolution.
I tried using it, and as far as I know it didn't work- I then restarted and voila, I have 1280x800.
Here is my xorg:
