Booting Puppy4 from HDD not FD or CD
 

Hi, I have installed Puppy 4 onto my ageing Toshiba Laptop, successfully I believe! However being completely new to the dark side that is Linux, I am not sure how to get said laptop to boot.

I have looked on here and on the net and found information about boot disks (floppys) but why can't I boot simply from the HDD like all of my previous Windoze installs?

I have read up on GRUB but to be honest it is quite baffling!

My HDD is ext3 so I think this means that a boot floppy is not feasible, does this just leave me with the option of GRUB?

When you installed Puppy did you not install a bootloader? It is possible to install a bootloader to an existing operating without using the installer but at this stage of the game I think that the easiest thing for you to do is to install Puppy again and this time install grub as your bootloader during the install.

Okay, at what point in the install is this done, and do I download it separately or is it part of the install.

For information, I have been formatting/partitioning with Knopix Live CD

Have you done a full installation? (If so, I've never done one, so I can't say where grub comes into the process.) Have you looked at the links on Barry Kauler's site about how to configure grub? http://www.puppylinux.com/hard-puppy.htm

Thanks for the info, I am looking at this http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/linuxcommand.org/lts0010.php, I am looking at it slow time - to get to grips with the command line basics, before I look at the Grub info. It really is quite hard to adjust from Windoze.
Although after many different distros would not install, I managed to get Backtrack2 to install and boot of its own accord - with no grub!?! Not sure I like BT2 - but it is a way into the command line at least!

after booting from cd (puppy pfix=ram),create a partision of ext2 or 3 using Gparted partison manager remember the partison, install from puppy universal installer,after the installation grub boot loader will start, use default configuration, when it asks for, install to MBR, you can edit the grub at /boot/grub/menu.lst. confirm or change the title of you puppy & the harddisk partion (hdo,0) for c drive in windows ,(hdo,1) d drive etc
reboot ,save the configuration to your linux partion
on reboot, you will be presented with option to boot to windows, or linux
