any puppy distro with firefox?
 

I am looking for a version of puppy that has neither opera nor seamonkey in it. I could not get java applets to work in seamonkey. I had no problems at all getting them to work in firefox tho, but that leaves me with a rather fat puppy. When I tried to save my session I found that there was not enough space. (using 256m jump drive) Also, when I tried to remaster, all I got was some text. Is my only option to use the "onebone" version and install EVERYTHING?

Every puppy variant I know of doesn't use FF, strange, and I don't know why...

Damn Small comes with Firefox.

As I understand it, you can also build custom with Puppy Unleashed, but I don't have that much experience with Puppy hacking.

Try going to the main Pupy forum and looking up John Murga's MeanPup - at about 50MB it comparable to DSL in size but you will have to download and install Firefox. There is also Puppy Lite which comes with Firefox.

Ok, I went to http://puppylinux.org/wikka/VersionsPuppy and here is what I found.

Mean puppy does not have firefox. It has opera.
Puppy lite appears to be just regular puppy, but with seamonkey (and the games, and some other stuff) removed.

Puppy lite looks like it would work for me, as long as I can get the remaster thing to work (tried it with barebones puppy and it didnt work)

optimized looks best though. it has firefox already as default browser and plugins. in fact this might be murga's. there are links there to murga.org

What I have been looking for is something that remains small (just one web browser) that can be java applet enabled. you see i have just a 256m jump drive and space is limited.
I don't think DSL will foot the bill, unless they have something similar to the way puppy will save your sessions. Thanks all.

Puppy Lite
 

Try looking in the forum in the Anouncements and/or the Additional software headings. You should find both Mean Puppy and Puppylite there. If I'm not mistaken with Barebones and some of the other stripped down variants you may have to install the Xorg X server to use some programs. As they come they only have Xvesa.

I tried barebones. Installed firefox and java, went to remaster and got some strange text message. Is there some trick to using remaster?

Ok I have burned a cd of puppy109ce, but haven't tried it out yet. I also tried installing firefox and java on 2.10 and remastering. I am not sure why, but firefox was not on my remastered cd, nor was java. BUT....the java installer was there. Anybody know why this is happening?

UPDATE: tried out the puppy109ce, I like it,(it is one of very few puppy versions that listens to me when I tell it I have a usb mouse) but I cannot get it to create a pupsav file at shutdown. For reasons unknown to me, though, my settings are saved as long as next boot is still puppy. I don't even get a screen to ask me where to save it. I am very puzzled. I try to create custom cd, but it tells me that there is no partition mounted in tmp/home. There was when I still had a pupsav file, which I had to get rid of to reformat that partition from vfat to ext3 because it tells me it can't do it with vfat.
I choose boot option 3 and tell it to create pup001 in dev/blah blah blah|numbers|linux ext3fs And I get an error message that doesn't stay on the screen very long, but it says something about being unable to. Well, other puppy versions have had no problem doing this. Also, the vfat partition that I reformatted to ext3, is still showing up as vfat during boot. After boot, it did show up as ext3 in mut (why is that?), but still no saving to pup001 at shutdown.
Update, I now have two ext3 partitions, a new one and the one reformatted from vfat, and choosing either one gets the same error message.

Updated update: Chose boot option 5 which is to force multisession. This was a closed disc, but apparently it works. So I believe I am getting closer to where I want to be, which is to have firefox and java included in a remastered cd.

the newer Puppy 2.x series create a save file when it shuts down ... it will ask you things like what size of file you want

the older Puppy 1.x series creates a save file automatically when it first boots, with out asking

Firefox can be downloaded, unzipped and run ... everything in 1 folder (except for the config files, of course)

Java is the same, it installs all of it's files in 1 folder

if you want to remaster Puppy with Firefox and Java, you will have to install them somewhere in /usr ... the files might have to be "registered with pupget" or Puppy might (or might not) move the files out, or at least, Puppy might not include those files when the remaster script runs

i don't really know, i have never used the remaster and install scripts, i tend to do things like that manually

the Java installer dotpup is probably mine. I tend to make packages that are as independant of Puppy as possible. My packages are really intended to be added to Puppy after it has been installed. The trouble with this approach, is that remaster scripts are more likely to exclude files that are in my packages.

Again, Puppy 1.x and Puppy 2.x work a little differently. Puppy 2.x might save anything you put in /usr automatically in the remastered cd. Or it might not, i have never tried remastering Puppy using those scripts.

Firefox is very easy to install on Puppy Linux. Click on the download link at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox , click Select All and then Extract To (after choosing where to extract) when PupZip pops up. Go to firefox/firefox and click on it to start. You may want to drag firefox to your desktop and insert the firefox icon. Then copy the plugins from /usr/lib/seamonkey/plugins to firefox/plugins . If you install RealPlayer, be sure to copy those plugins over too.

Yes yes, I know it is very easy to INSTALL. Problem is that what you have is a very bloated distro because I have heard that you CANNOT uninstall seamonkey without creating other problems. In fact it is even easier to install than the way you just said, you just click on the install icon and you either use pupget or a dotpup. That part is absolutely just as easy as windows. At any rate, 109ce appears to have everything I want except java, so I am left with the problem of remastering it. All went well in my last attempt except....I forget what it is called....I will try it over again and edit this post to tell you. It was something with altering some file with a line "ramdisk something or other".

oh, and GuestToo, I didn't say that your installer didn't make it to the remaster. I said that it was the ONLY thing that made it. I meant to delete the installer and leave java, lol. But that was with a different version of puppy than I am currently trying to remaster, so its a host of different problems now :) but thank you for the input and THANK YOU for creating the java installer. This is what I love about linux, the superb access to the people who make it all work. If you want help with MSwindows, you have to pay a ridiculous amount just to talk to some guy who knows nothing but can read a flowchart. He will just tell you to reinstall to fix your problems, lol.
