I tried using the Puppy grub installer and it screwed up my other distro Ubuntu. It went into a kernel panic. All I could do was reinstall it, and while I was at it I did a full install of Puppy.

Triple boot XP,Ubuntu, and Puppy on one SATA hard drive. I can now get windows and Ubuntu to boot, but have to use the CD to boot Puppy.

Partition 1 ? (hd0,0) Windows
Partition 2 SDA5 (hd0,4) Ubuntu where the boot grub is located
Partition 3 SDA7 (hd0,?) Puppy

Before the crash I had Puppy booting from the grub with (hd0,2). Now nothing works.

This is what I added to menu.lst on sda5 /boot/grub/menu.lst

title Puppy Linux 400
root (hd0,2)
kernel (hd0,2)/puppy400/vmlinuz PMEDIA=satahd
initrd (hd0,2)/puppy400/initrd.gz ##This worked when I had a frugal install

I also tried the suggested addition in the Puppy 4.0 manual, but no go.

I don't know what (hd0,?) device it is. When I tried (on Puppy)grub> find /boot/grub/stage1, I got (hd0,4) which is pointing to sda5 where the menu.lst is located that I am using.

well hd0 means that first drive and hd4 means your /boot partition.

try out this

boot from cd on rescue mode type gurb and press enter

grub > root (hd0,4)

grub > setup (hd0,4)


quit and restart

Backup your current menu.lst before changing it, then try this

title Puppy Linux (on /dev/hda7)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 ro vga=normal

(As for finding which device it is, as Shahz said, the first bit (hd0) is the disk number - if you've only got one disk, it will always be hd0. The second part (,x) is the partition number. Grub starts at 0, so the partition number will be one less than the "hda" (or "sda") number which starts at "1". So, the first partition hda1 is (hd0,0), partition hda2 is (hd0,1), partition hda3 is (hd0,2) and so on.)

I tried that and got a message kernel panic unable to mount. I changed root=/dev/hda7 to root=/dev/sda7 and it booted. On boot got a message that it was a read only system. It referred to /etc/mtab and a /mnt/??? line 124. I maybe need to change things in there. With the boot after changing menu.lst to above configuration, I had lost a couple of notes and a bookmark in the browser.
Now it looks like things are doing okay and the system is keeping my documents.
