Writing Linux driver - choosing a device

Recently I became interested in writing drivers, I have already written a small driver for my mp3 player to read the battery level and firmware version, but I'm not satisfied and looking for something a little more difficult

I'm looking for a simple USB device like LCD, adapter, keyboard, mouse etc. that has no Linux driver and no development on such driver is being or was made (I want to do it from scratch). I tried to look here:
but the information here are quite obsolete (for example the video adapter I'm using is marked as not supported, when in fact it's working). It would be nice if such device is popular and cheap enough to buy it.

Is there a more current list of unsupported USB devices? Or something like a request list?

Great! Is that driver under GPL license? If yes, then would you mind putting it on sourceforge so that it serves as an example for someone willing to learn?
