Where to obtain information for applications

At this current time I am trying to learn the c language and one application that I have planned is that I want to design my own dhcp server. Now I know someone is going to come along and say why reinvent the wheel. If you are going to say that then my response to you will be because It will help me learn. Now my question will be where can I go to get information on say this is how it works and so on? Would I start with the RFC's is that where programmers go to get information or do they go somewhere else? I hope this was some what clear because even in my head I am having problems phrasing the question.

And when you answer this put your self in a progarmers shoes who has no network administration background and was just asked to do this out of the blue by hist boss. and one last thing I don't want any code posting. That will take all the fun out of it.

well yes it's RFC's or other project source code. find the smallest current server you can and try to see how it does it. dnsmasq might be a good candidate.

Thanks acid. That was going to be my sort of cheat sheet if you will. Like if and when I get stuck I will peek into the source code of dhcpd. However this is going to sound strange but I am on my perl kick again so I think (Call me crazy) I will try to build it first in perl. it may not run that great but this is going to be a great project. Then I will move to c.
