Lightbulb what tools should i use to code a cross platform software?

I am a microbiologist and also an amateur programmer. I wanted to write a software that would basically be a gui that will consist of a couple of text fields and use the input to generate a text file.

While I use linux exclusively, all my colleagues use ms windows (mostly XP).

I want to make a program that will run 100% same on both platforms. I will be using Python for the backend, and want to use some gui building tool for the frontend.

Please give suggestions how I should proceed.

Thank you.

Usually it is Java.

If you want to use Python, you can use Jython - I quite enjoy it. All the portability of Java, with the clean syntax of Python.

I have always been fascinated with developing cross-platform applications, and I have started looking into C# (via the Mono Project) but I have not done any tinkering and couldn't tell you if there are any caveats aside from referencing the file system.
