What Linux programmer is paid for?

Hi Guys
What Linux programmer is paid for?
All the software for Linux is for free.

What is future of Linux C++ developer at job market?

Hi.

Most of the world's software is written inside businesses to do a specific thing that business needs, and never released. Programmers get paid for this regardless of what OS the software runs on.

People also get paid for writing Free Software. RedHat and IBM, for example, have teams of programmers writing code, and getting paid to do so. A lot of Free Software projects get by on donations too.

Look at it this way: scientists are paid to think up new ideas & ways of doing things, & then release their ideas/methods free of charge to be used by anyone who wants them.

Linux/FOSS software writers could be said to work on a similar principle.

I guess that many software companies are hiring Unix/Linux programmers to port their Windows programs. Linus himself believes that paid/closed-source software may co-exist with free/open-source

But I do believe that free/open-source is the panacea and will solve all our problems, so we can safely bet that paid software is doomed to disappear unless it's for very specific needs and customized to XYZ enterprise

I guess not, Win to Unix porting is a pretty small niche.

Why would he not ?

That's optimistic .... ;)

The specific needs are by far larger than the generic ones, implementing them is what most of the programmers are paid for.

Probably, but don't put all your eggs in one basket. I would say learn C as well as you can, try to learn at least 2-3 languages well if you expect to be in demand.

What about linux programming in general ???

What language C# Java???

Python Perl PHP???

As a programmer you never stop learning. You become better at what you do and learn new things in the process. I've found C++ and Perl to be my 2 most useful tools. But that's not all I know.

What you learn will be relative to what you want to do. The kernel is written in C. Most new software is written in C++ or a higher level language. Java seems to have its hotspots like real-time and web applications.
