What is XML?

Can anybody tell me anything about XML. I have heard about it but dont know why I would use it or what for. Can anybody explain? Also, are there any XML sites? Its more of a curiosity than anything else.

Or here:
http://www.w3.org/XML/

It's similar to HTML, except it's a lot less implementation-specific.

XML is for structured, nested data which follows a well-defined scheme. It inherently requires some overhead, so it's not a cure-all for persistent data storage.

It's the latest thing that all managers want whether appropriate or not.

It's a way to encapsulate every 3 bytes of useful data into about 1k
and use 2 Gig of RAM for a simple search operation.
;-)

( I work with it! )
