What is this value means for???

If we run the 'top' command on bash shell, it will displaying all tasks on our computer. And there is a line like this :
Code:
Cpu(s): 10.0%us, 7.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 78.1%id, 3.9%wa, 0.5%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st
I have read the top manual page, but there is no description about the 'us','sy','ni','id','wa','hi','si','st'.

Could anybody tell me the meaning each of those?

  • us = user (use of CPU)
  • sy = system (use of CPU)
  • ni = nice (use of CPU)
  • id = idle CPU
  • wa, hi, si - I'm not sure
  • st = stopped (I'm not certain about this)

  • wa = waiting (used by processes waiting for I/O)
  • hi = hardware interrupt (used for serving hardware interrupts)
  • si = software interrupt (used for serving software interrupts)
  • st = steal (used by virtual CPUs waiting while the hypervisor is servicing another virtual processor, on virtual machines)
