what are 'makefile', 'configure'?

When installing some sofware there is usually 'makefile' and 'configure'. I want to program my own programs for Linux. What are 'makefile''s and 'configure' files?

Check out this book online for a pretty good explanation of Makefiles and the various autobuild tools.
