Vim syntax highlighting

For the life of me I can not get vim syntax highlighting to work any more.

I have tried, Syn on and set hls, with no avail. Is there something that I keep missing? I use to just make a .vimrc in my home directory but that doesnt seem to work now

nevermind I dont know why this has been bothering me for so long, I noticed if I open a file that has a .c extention for example, the highlighting works. But if I just open up vim and start typing it does nothing. If any one knows a way to make it highlight with open actualy opening a file, I would be very thankfull to your insight.

on the im command line and see if the path is correct. Navigate to the path and make usre there's a syntax directory there.

This often happens when you update your version of vim AND you have set a VIM path in your .bashrc that you did not update.

Generally of course, the file extension is crucial. Be consistent with your file extensions.
