uuencode doesn't attach on linux

Does anyone know why

Code:
uuencode ~/.profile profile | mailx -s profile billy
doesn't work on my linux box but does on solaris
i.e. sends mail as an attachment?

Is it because I'm using postfix and not sendmail?
Even outlook recognises it as an attachment
from solaris.

I'm using FC1 & couldnt find mailx or uuencode on my system

Works perfectly fine with the solaris system at my workplace too. I don't remember the syntax of uuencode but would this make any difference?

Code:
uuencode .profile .profile > profile.uuc
mailx -s profile billy < profile.uuc
rm profile.uuc
HTH.
