Using the Multiple tape option with TAR

Hi
I want to use the multiple tape option with the tar command running on a linux server.
As there is no screen on the server I need to get the script to send an email to advise that the tape needs changing.
I see that you have an option to run a further script when a tape is required but the seems to cycle round until the enter key is pressed.
Has anyone got a solution ?
