Using AWT on SUSE 9.3

I have installed all gcc/gcj files, as well as the java JDK. I can compile and run simple programs, such as "hello world", but when I try to create a frame using java.awt, I compile and run the program with no problems, but nothing happens.

zeppelin147@linux:~/javaFiles> gcj --main=Step1 -o a
zeppelin147@linux:~/javaFiles> ./a

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
