UPS Software Development

I'm purchasing a CyberPower CP900AVR UPS. It has serial/USB management ports. It doesn't seem like, or at least I can't find any management software for linux. What would be involved in developing such software? Is it possible to do with without information from the manufacturer? Any help/advice is appreciated.

On Debian Sarge, I used powstatd for my UPS for a while. But I didn't install it on my new etch machine.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do some more research, but it seems that either powstatd or apcupsd should work for me.
