uploading multiple files with php

Hey all
I'm setting up a little script that displays pictures that are stored in a tree in my DocumentRoot on my server. Yesterday i wrote a script that uploads new photos into a new directory, and creates thumbnails of the images to be used in the script. I am using
[CODE]
for($i=0;$i<20;$i++) echo "<input type=\"file\" name=\"photo[$i]\">";
[/CODE}
to upload the files, and it works fine. The problem i have with it is that it is rather slow, process consuming, and i have a hard time uploading batches of files, or an entire album to put it in this context. Now before i start coding a way at finding a different method (maybe FTP) I thought i'd post to see if anybody had any ideas on how to upload a bunch of files in an easy, quick way.
Any ideas are appreciated.
