Undefined reference error in MD5_Init()

i am trying to implement IPSEC, for which i am stuck up with the error

Undefined reference error in MD5_Init()
in implementing the HMAC SHA algorithm.

i have included the header files openssl/md5.h
openssl/hmac.h

can anyone please help???
