tape i/o using ioctl

I am trying to get the status from a tape unit using ioctl function
MTIOCGET. The function works but the information returned does not
make since ( i.e. tape should show beginning of tape and write
protected ). The mtget structure is different between linux and
unix. I can read/write and do tape functions but not sure MTIOCGET
is giving me correct tape status. Does anyone use this to talk to
tapes?wagner@dawson3d.com
