String over Internet


I am developing a GTK/GNOME program and I need to get a string from a text file from internet.For example,I need the contents of http://www.somedomain.com/somefile.txt Can anybody suggest some way or function to use and then I will go for the docs

Open a port to that server/port and just push the command "GET /somefilename.txt" or whatever it is you're trying to get.
