Beej's guide to network programming is for beginners, then read a book about socket programming, for instance: Linux Socket Programming by Sean Walton or UNIX Network Programming, Vol 1.

IMHO the best book on socket API is "UNIX network programming" by Richard Stevens. It's quite large and isn't a "howto learn a socket programming in 3 hours" and can hardly be called "the book for the beginners". But it's very complete and if you have time and wish, and want continue socket programming after your study then it's the best choice.

Good luck!
