Screensaver Programming

How does one go about learning to program screensavers? I'm roughly familiar with a couple of languages (mostly based on tutorials) yet a google search doesn't seem to offer much hope in this area. Granted, screensavers are mostly gimmicks, but I think we could use a few more good ones, yet I'm not even sure how to get started. Any advice or links are appreciated.

you need to use opengl and Xwindows programming

There's a couple of screensaver programming links at www.reallyslick.com. Lot's of good screensavers too!
