Resource for image manipulation

Hi there! I have basic knowledge in gtk+ and want to create softwares like
photoshop cs and apple's final cut. I need to know the process for
editing or modifying images. For example, what math calculations are needed to
change brightness/contrast, how to change the intensity of colors, how to
apply filters(blur) etc. Can anyone recommend a beginner's tutorial or a book for
that matter?
Thanks.

Grab the source for GIMP and ImageMagick?

Cheers,
Tink
