Well first there is this site and then this one which would indicate that C is very much alive and being used.

From a teach point of view the biggest stumbling block with C for new students is pointers, that is one reason that Java has become popular in colleges. But Pascal was one of my first languages and since it was designed to teach people good programming practices it is such a shame that it has essentially fallen off the radar.

Just to add that the 'Death of Programmers' has been touted for about as long, if not longer, and about as unrealistically
