Reading/Wirting file/parsing xml file using javascript

I can read/write a file whether it's xml or normal text by javascript using ActiveX; so it's only in windows.

I wanna do it in linux; ie the client is linux browser (eg Mozilla suit, firefox or konquorer).

Can anybody help me?
