Questions about how to read OS source code

Can you give me some suggestions about studying OS source code?Thank you !

When I found that I couldn't understand so many mathematical conceptions as well as couldn't get a correct and useful method to get through so many lines of os source code (I'm studying the minix source ,for i think it maybe a little bit simple )but I really unable to get into it at all.Just like get lost in the sea.

Can you give me some suggestions about how to get well with code?

And can you tell me some experience of yours ?

I heard that if you want to read OS source you should programming as many as you can,Does this true?

thank you again.

well it's good if you have a target to look at it. i.e. your hacking the protocol stack so you'll prolly spend most of your time in net/core/ipv4/* . what i usually do is just use grep a lot. you'll find that you need to see what members are in some structure or read some function definition, you just use the command option in vi :!grep bla /path/to/bla . that's how i usually go about it. i wouldn't advise just "reading" aimlessly. a great place to start reading is /usr/src/linux/Documentation, especialy the CodingStyle file.
