Query regarding RIP1

Hi friends!
I am able to add a route to the routing table statically ie from the command prompt after logging in as root, using the route command.
But I dont know how to alter the contents of a Routing table and how to read the contents of routing table within a program.
I need to do this because, we are in to developing the RIP1 protocol
and RIP1 has to access the Routing table contents and modify them and also learn about the new routes and add them to the routing table and forward the routing table contents to its neighbors.
So friends, if u could tell me how to do this, it would be of great help to me.
And friends do i need to learn some new concepts for this: like device drivers, kernel module programming etc.? Please tell me friends.
I would be grateful to u.
Thanking you

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
