proxy.pac or wpad.dat question.

Normally on a proxy.pac file it for proxy selection or direct or such.

I wondered if I can say use instead of

if (localHostOrDomainIs(host, "www.zippy.zipzip.zippydoda.com")) return "DIRECT";

Use this.

if (localHostOrDomainIs(host, "www.zippy.zipzip.zippydoda.com")) return "10.10.2.5:8080/webstart";

I want to change the dns on some clients to correct for kiosk settings. The whole deal was that a national entry would have sent back the correct local computer but they don't seem to be bothered.

no, that's not legitimate. you need to return a definition of a proxy, how is it fair to expect to interpret that in a totally different way?

I thank you for your reply.

So you are pretty sure that PROXY being a direct address to some http server would fail, that only a proxy server in that line would do?

Since proxy.pac files disregard the hosts file and return from dns, how would I swap to the correct server since I can't go direct and I don't have a way to proxy to the correct server?

"The string can contain any number of the following building blocks, separated by a semicolon:

DIRECT
Connections should be made directly, without any proxies.
PROXY hostort
The specified proxy should be used.
SOCKS hostort
The specified SOCKS server should be used."

Odd. the smiley face shouldn't be there.

Dumb national startup script checks the registry (windows) so I can't even edit that and keep it over a reboot.

This whole deal is a contractor deal and they don't seem to want to fix it. National support's reply was to tape a message on the systems to tell users the correct ip address. Not my kind of repair.

so the function is called "FindProxyForURL()"... it needs a proxy directive. Sounds like this is not the solution you want.

Proxy.pac can't disregard the hosts file, it has nothing to do with it. when that function is called, it's not concerned with resolving the name to the IP, but knowing if it needs a proxy or not.

Thanks for you help anyway. All this is moot. Darn start up scripts overwrite any change I have made so far. They really have it locked down on reboot. Sure I can change it until then but users just can't help themselves and reboot it for some reason. Dunno, waste time?

I am thinking that the fix is to put a sign up with the correct IP address.

Every system we've had a proxy.pac on for the last 15 years has not allowed any hosts file entry to work. Try it.

Guess I'll close this. Thanks.
