Problem with boost regex - can't compile easiest examples
I wanted to use boost regex library for regex compare and regex substitutions, I've tried to compile one example I found in google, but even without changing anything I can't compile it. Here's an error:
Code:
$ g++ -o boost boost.cpp

Here's code I've tried to compile:
Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <boost/regex.hpp> // Boost.Regex lib
using namespace std;
int main( ) {
std::string s, sre;
boost::regex re;
while(true)
{
cout << "Expression: ";
cin >> sre;
if (sre == "quit")
{
break;
}
cout << "String: ";
cin >> s;
try
{
// Set up the regular expression for case-insensitivity
re.assign(sre, boost::regex_constants::icase);
}
catch (boost::regex_error& e)
{
cout << sre << " is not a valid regular expression: \""
<< e.what() << "\"" << endl;
continue;
}
if (boost::regex_match(s, re))
{
cout << re << " matches " << s << endl;
}
}
}
Version:
Code:
$ g++ -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: i486-linux-gnu
Configured with: ../src/configure -v --enable-languages=c,c++,fortran,objc,obj-c++,treelang --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --with-system-zlib --libexecdir=/usr/lib --without-included-gettext --enable-threads=posix --enable-nls --program-suffix=-4.1 --enable-__cxa_atexit --enable-clocale=gnu --enable-libstdcxx-debug --enable-mpfr --with-tune=i686 --enable-checking=release i486-linux-gnu
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)
I've installed packages libboost-dev libboost-regex1.33.1 and libboost-regex-dev using apt-get.
I even tried to download boost sources from sourceforge and compile it... but it gave me this same error during compiling. Maybe you have any ideas how to solve it? Errors look really strange.
Best regards,
Michal

You need to link to the library you've installed. Do you know the actual library's name? It should be something line libboost.so . If you don't know what it is, look in /usr/loca/lib for something that looks like the name of the package you installed.

Yes, the majority of boost is header-only (no external linking is required). The Boost.regex library is not. So you have to link to it directly. If you use a distro package, you will most likely need to do:
Code:
g++ -lboost_regex -o boost boost.cpp
If you compiled yourself, you might need to do:
Code:
g++ -lboost_regex-gcc-mt -o boost boost.cpp
