...its distributor to not be able to be run on anything less than PHP 4.2, but also explicitly states that it will also not run on PHP5.

What in PHP5 might not allow a PHP 4.2 LAMP app. to run? (The distributor allows that the project works fine on MySQL5 and Apache2.)

Is there any known aspect of PHP5 that is disallows backward compatibility for a PHP 4.2 prog?
