The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I disagree that ASP isn't good. I think its a good starter language. I haven't tried .net since I dont have a gjillion pounds to by XP professional. But ASP is easy to learn and you can do all you want.
However that said PHP is better in many ways and I use that now. I'd give both a shot and see which you like. Or find out which your webserver supports.

I am going to have to say niether and both. It all depends on what you are doing, and how much you know about your language. People are always quick to day my, language can do this, and your can't well. The truth is, there aren't many things one language can do that another can't do.
It is all going to be based, on you and your coding skills.
Now my personal favorite is perl for CGI, and mod_perl.
If I had to choose between ASP, and PHP. I would be PHP, because I am a hell of a lot better at using that than I am at using ASP.
