Newbie desperate about how to start Linux programming in C

Hello everyone,
I need help to start programming in 'C' on Linux platforms. Though I feel good at it in Dos platform, but I need to know some basics about what you call system calls like :-
exec, spawn, fork, signal etc, and also like clearing screen(clrscr() doesn't work in Linux as there is no such conio.h).

Also I would like to have programming details about multithreading, multiprogramming in Linux. Note that in DOS i haven't learn't that(its a single user environment).

Please keep in consideration that i am not talking about GUI programming.

That's the canonical "network programming in C" starting point for most people, but I am wondering why you feel the need to use C. There are many other languages that are also good for networking applications, but allow you to dig in to the actual problem-solving part of it faster and worry less about the network particulars.
