The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

New Linux user (developer) looking for language advice?

I've just started using Linux this last month (FC5) and have had the most fun on a computer I've had in years. I've done a bit of programming in the past and want to contribute to the open source community and brush up on my skills. My questions are about languages. I've used C++ and VB in the past, and was wondering if I should use Java or C for Linux. My job right now is not programming related, but I do use a database occasionally (Filemaker) and a bit of scripting (apple script) to get things done. So I'm looking for opinions. If you were in my shoes what would you put energy into? Java or C++? What would be best for both the Linux community and for my career.

I appreciate it!

I would say ISO C++ . IMHO, it is one of the best programming language. Anyway, you cannot do all in C++ (e.g., logic programming) and it is always a good idea to know other programming languages.

You might also wish to have a look at D. It seems a quite promising programming language.

Best wishes,
