Need some network programming info

I was wondering if anyone could point me to some information on network programming on the packet level and perhaps some information on encryption? I assume there are encryption libraries or something of the sort.

for encryption, things to google for might be gpgme or gcrypt. A lot of apps which use public key encryption just use the gnupg program over pipes. Try "man 3 encrypt" -- that looks like pretty simple to use symmetric encryption. If you don't know what symmetric or public key means, you need a high level encryption tutorial/introduction -- I don't know a good one off the top of my head but I'd be happy to parse a couple pages of google results if you want a suggestion.

I assume that symmetric is the same as shared key encryption?

Thanks so much for the good suggestions. I've got a lot of research to do.

I don't hear "shared key" very often but yes, I'd imagine it means the same as symmetric. The encryptor and decryptor have to know a common secret.
