Go with the gcc suite of compilers. Is there really anything better? :p ;)

thanks, sewer_monkey.

there are many other "better" compilers, such as absoft fortran compilers and pgi c compilers, as I was told. it is really hard to say which is better unless I can try for a while. the question is I have to make the decision soon and the license costs over $1000!

here is a benchmark table:

but I need advices from programmers, especially those having experience on absoft and pgi compilers.

Gcc is standard for Linux. You know that everyone has it, so there's no problem with compiler incompabilities when moving your project to another machine...
