need help with IP split

I want to take an IP and chop off the last part of it (IE: 10.0.0.1 would be 10.0.0) and compare it to an array. I know how to compare, I just forgot how to split and keep the first part :(

hmm what language? nobody can help unless you tell us that as the method varies between languages and is impossible in others
