Need help regarding setting Perl and file permissions...

I currently have SuSE 9.3 Pro installed and have been unble to successfully setup Perl with Apache.

Novell suggests on their webpage to create 'misc' directory in /svr/www/cgi-bin/ and also in /svr/www/htdocs/ , edit the 'www' system group as root using YaST, ticking the relevant username(lets call it XYZ) so they have become group member of 'www'. Once done, we are to chmod 755 the 2 misc directories and change group ownership to 'www' using chgrp www /svr/www/cgi-bin/misc and also /svr/www/htdocs/misc.

The problem when i log in as XYZ, although I can read and execute files in /misc directory, I can't write any files in them, yet logged in as root I dont have a problem. Ive also tried chmod 775 and that didnt help either.

Perhaps there is an easier way of setting up Perl with Apache and Suse/Linux ? Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated, thankyou.

If you want the XYZ user to be able to write to the misc directories, it has to have permissions of 775, not 755. If that still doesn't work, can you tell us what "ls -ld /svr/www/htdocs/misc /svr/www/cgi-bin/misc" gives you? root will always be able to write to any file or directory, regardless of permissions - that's why it's called the superuser!
