n00b question, Need help fast
 

Hello, my name is Stefan and im farely new to Linux, to be precise i've only been working with it for 2 weeks because of my internship. I found it to be very interesting, but for now, i was using the 'Windows-a-like' shell provided with SUSE 9.3.

The point I called out for help is because I need to create a Linux server that can act as a PDC to Windows systems. Now I know what y'all might say, use Samba, or go look here for installing samba....BUT! the very very very big problem I need to overcome is not using Samba, but is the fact that I need to Install SUSE Linux in X-Window and that I need to configure Samba and everything else in X-Window too.

Now i've searched the web for several days now without any success for finding a tutorial or a how-to on installing Linux through X-Window.

Now is my question to the Pro's here:
Can someone please write me a specific How-to (with the precise commands with it) or does someone know a website where they have this How-to. Because I'm in my second week now, and I was supposed to get a server up and running in three weeks. So even the littlest bit of help is very much appreciated.

i'm not sure what you mean

you want suse linux installed like a virtual machine in another suse linux installation
and in the Vserver you install the samba server?

if this is right
your problem will be the vserver, not the samba installation?

i'm not sure what you mean with X-Window because you don't need X-Window for samba or a vserver

I'm very sorry for being so unclear about the whole situation. I blame it on the time I was writing it, because it was at the very end of a long day so :p .

Anyway, What I mean is, I need to install SUSE on a blank system, without the shell to work in. And from there on I need to re-configure it into a server. A server that uses samba to allow Windows workstations to login into a Linux server that acts as the PDC.

(ow and about X-window, forgive me about me misunderstanding it, I thought that, without the shell, You use X-window to configure it all, Including Samba....My bad :rolleyes: )

I've never used SuSE before but it seems like they would have SuSE bootable installation CDs. You can use those CDs to install SuSE onto the machine (the installation process should let you do all the drive partitioning and stuff as well). Then, after SuSE is installed, now you'll have a functional OS to work with, and you can go on from there and install and set up the Samba server.

It would be a similar process to say, setting up a new machine with a Windows based web server or something. You'd install Windows from the installation CDs on the machine, and then once you have Windows installed and running, then you can go on and set up any applications you want, like a web server.

Ah, you can download and install SuSE 9.3 here; follow the installation instructions down at the bottom of the page. There's a step-by-step guide for installing it. You'll want that ftp version down at the bottom... I think. They have an "eval version" there too but I don't know if it's somehow crippled or not.

We beginnen eerst met jou en Suse te laten installeren. De bedoeling is (voor nu) dat je bekend raakt met linux/suse en dat je een serve kan installeren zonder grafische gedeelte (x-window).

Mocht je daarmee vorderingen maken, gaan we je opdracht uitbreiden. Het is nu niet de bedoeling dat ik je met zee van informatie gaat voorzien over een hele moeilijke opdracht, maar we zien hoe het allemaal loopt.

Zoals ik al aangaf we beginnen makkelijk om ook een indruk van je te krijgen.

We will start by letting you install Suse. The idea (for now) is to get you familiar with Linux/suse and that you can install a serve without the graphical part (x-window).

Sounds like they want you to install SuSE... looks like you can download the 9.3 Evaluation Version installation CD ISOs and burn them. The Eval Version actually appears to be fully functional but hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong before you get fooled. You can download the ISOs here, and there are brief instructions (although you won't really need them) linked to at the bottom of that page, with pictures.

The second thing it seems like they want you to do is set up a server without using X-Windows. Which seems silly... even if you had X-Windows running you'd probably be doing all your set up through a terminal anyway. Usually installation of that kind of stuff doesn't involve any GUI work even if you wanted it too... it's pretty straightforward to start up your machine with a non-graphical login instead of going right into X. And then you can happily set up your Samba server through your fullscreen, always-on-top, 80x25 xterm ;)
