Mysql password problem (need to erase old)

I just installed Apache2 + Mysql + PHP in my home network in order to be able to create blos using wordpress.

The Apache stuff was pretty straightfoward, alltought there have been some changes in the last version (2.0.54). If you need it ask me.

PHP 4.4.3 was also straightforward.

Mysql installed fine, but as I tryed to set the root user I got a problem.

I did:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h komsomol password 'mypasswd'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'mypassword'
the latter failed, Then I tryed using the -p option
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -p 'mypassword'
wich led to a new fiasco:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)
So now I need to know where the password files for mysql are located in order to edit them or send them straight to /dev/null so I can run mysql_install_db again...

TIA ;)
