Hello all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to be putting this, if not please direct. I plan on making a music organizer in which the library, a playlist, and possibly the queue can be browsed. The browser will have four buttons (Genre, Artist, Album, Songs) at the top, and a list view below to show your options for one of the buttons. Online radio is a must, as I'm thoroughly addicted. I plan to set up an XML-RPC framework so it can be used over the network like mpd. It'll be written in C++, and I'm currently focusing on using Xfc for the gui, but it will be abstract enough to where a port (QT, php for web-based, and if I'm bored enough to start punching myself, javascript) would be easy to write. As far as backend, I hope to also get that abstracted enough to be flexible, but right now I've got my eye on xine-lib. Browsing already works, but it's not very useful yet. I figure anything is possible, but right now I just need a name. I've named the directory and binary "gtkdj", but, since I hope to have at least one of the above ports, it's not very apt. Anyway, if anybody can get me barking up the right tree, I'll be ever grateful.
Yeah, I liked gtkdj too, but it may end up having completely "gtkless" front-ends via perhaps php or qt. Because of that, I'm thinking any name containing gtk wouldn't really fit. This goes despite my fondness and support of gtk. So, no, gtk in the name won't really work. As you said, though, this does get the ball rolling, and I thank you for your ideas. LMS rolls off the tonge nicely . In general, I would like to stay away from anything implementation-specific like gtk or linux in the name.
I thought of *dj because I think of a dj having power and capability at his fingertips. That is something I would like people to see about this framework. I may ponder using some German word when I'm not as tired. I'm currently trying to learn German, so I may as well get a small lesson out of it.
I just finished my 4th semester of German here at Marshall, but I don't think in the 2 years it took me to do that I still can't think of any relevant german words lol.
MONN That's actually not too bad. It sort of reminds me of yet another "yet another ..." though.
Actually, if I use the word "penguin", it'll imply linux, but not neccesarily lock it into linux. So, DJPenguin? 4000 google results, but it seems to be owned by no-one. There is a user of the xfce forums with that name, and since this is being developed first for xfce, maybe that's not wise.
Hmm, DJWaddle, DJEatFish? Zero hits! Maybe I can push into the BSD crowd with WaddlingDevil, or DJWaddlingDevil. Both have zero hits and a decent ring. Feedback?
lol DJEatFish dosen't sit well with my stomach, much less my music collection! DJWaddle is amusing if nothing else. What about just DJDevil, DJD for short? Again I guess you've still got the "name implys a operating system" problem, but I don't think thats too big a deal.
I'm not a big fan of fish, myself anyway. I was about to jump at DJDevil, but 14,000 google results. What about djMLU for Music Library Unleashed? Or just djMU? djFYM for Free Your Music? (looks like there an actual, though obscure, dj named that) Or FYMdj? djUYM for Unleash Your Music? Hmm, these suck.
