Mfg needs Product Configurator

Hello,

I work for a small manufacturing company. Their current accounting system runs in linux and has almost no manufacturing/inventory features.

The engineering department is experimenting with building a rules based product configurator to help them put together Bills of material and product costing data. Does anybody know of any freeware that allows you to build multi-level BOM?

Also, I know virtually nothing about programming in a linux environment. where would be a good source for me to learn how to do database programming in Linux (in case I have to write this program myself)?

Thanks,
