[SOLVED] manipulating variables with {} in bash

guys, I've always seen scripts in bash that manipulate the string inside a variable by printing a portion of the variable by doing something like this

Code:

${1#:-}

where the separating field is the colon ":" and then they print the everything after the colon doing something like

Code:

${1#:%}

"I'm not exactly sure on the syntax, this I saw somewhere and can't remember exactly" I was hoping for someone that maybe knows what I'm talking about that can explain
