makefile error

Ok I have been using Linux for about a year now and I have been programming c++ for a little bit longer. I am just started making the transition to gcc and kdevelop. I am trying to just compile some little programs to get a feel for how things work. I am getting the following error and I am not exactly sure what to do about it, any help is appreciated!

/bin/sh /home/durden/c++/2413/test/test/admin/missing --run automake --foreign Makefile
aclocal.m4:3009: your implementation of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE comes from an
aclocal.m4:3009: old Automake version. You should recreate aclocal.m4
aclocal.m4:3009: with aclocal and run automake again.
make: *** [] Error 1

what version of automake is installed on your system? Looks like you need to upgrade it if that error message is correct.

automake --version will tell you what version you have btw.

Well I have version 1.6.3 and synaptic (apt-get) shows that is the newest version. Any other ideas or anything else for me to try?
