majordomo message_footer

I want to send a footer with newsletters.

it seems simple in the .config file:

message_footer = << END
text to be displayed at footer
END

but it doesn't work.
I tried to delete space between << and END, but then also it refuses to display text below the mail.

Anyone any idea how to make it work, or what setting might be wrong?
