looking for X programming tutorial (C or C++)

Hey guys, are there any decent tutorials out there on how to write
programs for X.

(not sure of the technical term, but you know what i mean right ?
i want to write a program in a window rather than xterm interface)

i know there are toolkits to help like GTK and QT
but before i get into those i would like to learn a few of the basics.
