Long time lurker, first time poster - suggested open source projects?
 

Hi all,
I've used LQ for a long time to answer questions about Linux, albeit w/o ever posting a question. I've been laid off and I see in the ads for many jobs questioning whether you'd contributed to an open source project. Can anyone suggest a project that could use a db geek with lots of Python experience to work on? I'd also love to sink my teeth into some C, or just about anything. I have some time on my hands and would like to give back to the community that I've gotten so much from.

I was thinking of cx-oracle, first I'll have to see if I can get it to work and then see if they'd appreciate any help. For many years I used DCOracle2 but that hasn't been updated for newer versions of Oracle(I think). I didn't see any indications that Zope was going to update it either. I figure that if they wanted to it would be done.

Wouldn't that require that you have a copy of the current Oracle on your system? Doesn't that require a hefty investment for someone out of work? (Just curious - I haven't used Oracle since my last consulting job in 1995, where the client payed the $500/year fee for a "Personal" copy.)

Does the Python Oracle interface bring anything to the table that's not available with interfaces from Python to FOSS data bases? If so, perhaps you might consider starting your own project forked, perhaps, from the cx-oracle one, to implement similar features for some FOSS data base(s).

Oracle is free from OTN. As to your other points I'll look into them. After a first glance at cx_oracle though I was wondering why they didn't have the binaries for OEL, color me clueless - new to this. I'll be asking.
