Does this mean that your Java implementation doesn't have a defaultCharset?
defaultCharset returns UTF-8
but I couldn't get the Euro sign symbol

$ echo $LC_ALL
$ echo $LC_CTYPE

These two are undefined. I VPN and use putty to get into one server and then SSH to my current server.

I'm afraid the screw up is somewhere on the way. I.e. something in the VPN <-> putty <-> server does not understand UTF.

Found the problem. Putty encoding was set to iso-8859-1. I've changed it to utf-8. Thanks Sergei.

Regards "FYI, whenever user entered non-ASCII characters(e.g. ∞,€,™) in a text field in my web application, and I check the log of my Java code in Linux server, it returns weird characters", what are you using to check the log?

You could use the likes of od to see exactly what is in the log without relying on how whichever utility you are using interprets it for display.
