Linux and OpenGL

I'm a bit confused about Linux and OpenGL. From what I can tell, the only implementation of OpenGL for Linux is Mesa 3D.

I read that Mesa 3D is not an "official OpenGL implementation". Is there an official OpenGL implementation for Linux? Is Mesa 3D what most people use for OpenGL on Linux?

I have installed games and applications that use openGL, and they work. So I never worried about that.

OpenGL on my machine identifies itself as nVidia (my card and driver) and the version number is that of my nVIdia driver release.
I've heard of MESA-3D but I don't know what it is.

Oh, I meant for programming, like, the OpenGL API. Not just the runtime/driver.

There is a pretty good chance the drivers for your video card contain their own Open GL implementation. I think they do this on Windows too. Nvidia and ATI both implement at least 2.0.
