Sorry, I was confusing functional with imperative.

But I see OCaml is in the functional category, to me it looks like the most promising one.

At the moment, I mainly just want to explore functional programming to look at a different way to approaching problems. I may then want to go into it more deeply, but not committing to that at the moment.

From what's been said, I think I'll work through the Scheme tutorial that Taylor linked to. I may then take a look at Haskell - been thinking of learning it for the project in the degree I'm doing with the Open University at present (perhaps a comparison between concurrency in Haskell and Java). I think it's the Perl stuff that I'd be more likely to go into deeply, though.

As I said all good choices and its all about exploring.I can tell you that its fun to learn and it will be an experience.Scheme should give you an ease into the paradigm so good choice.
